Psalm 124 opens with this important hypothetical: “If the Lord had not been on our side . . .”
Many times in my life, I‘ve wondered how would I cope with this life-disaster without the Lord? How would I handle this stress without God? If the Lord had not been on my side . . . ?
But then the Psalm’s last line gives the vibrant confidence that belongs to the people of God: “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
And so we need fear nothing.
And so all is well no matter what befalls.
And so we are secure.
Our help comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.
