Ford and Tucker argue that leaders must categorize problems as three different kinds and leaders struggle when they solve the wrong kind of problem. The three are tactical, strategic and transformational.
Tactical issues are operational, technical or fiduciary. They can usually be handled by expertise. Strategic have to do with responding to the world outside your organization. Transformational are vial challenges related to values often rooted in the system.
Each problem has a different key question: tactical: what’s wrong let’s fix it. Strategic: what’s our objective? Let’s accomplish it Transformative – what’s the question Let’s discover it. (59)
